1. Loyalty is a two way street and as a person, a company or a brand, you have to apologize when you screw up. Don’t focus on yourself, rather focus on how that mistake affected other people.

2. Don’t complain. Just work harder. “That’s a picture of Jackie Robinson. It was in his contract not to complain, even when fans spit on him.” When friends, fans, or consumers spit on you, don’t complain. Take their feedback and see how you can improve things in your business.

3. “Get a feedback loop and listen to it.” Your feedback loop can be the CEO listening online, a tool like Social Strategy1’s total media intelligence platform, to “it can just be one great man who tells you what you need to hear.” The toughest part is listening to the feedback. The smartest thing you can do is figure out strategies to improve and innovate.

4. Be prepared to respond to negative commentary and positive results. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity. Listening  is the best way to prepare a strategy.

5. Don’t ever quit. It’s a constantly changing world. If you stay focused and determined, you will end up on top eventually.

Remember hip and trendy are short-term. Honesty and earnest people and companies are long-term.
